Overview
The Portfolio Map Canvas v0.1 — a single canvas with a substantial application guide (a "semi-toolkit")
The Portfolio Map Canvas is unusual in the Boundaryless catalogue: it's a single canvas, but it comes with a long-form Application Guide that rivals the full PDT and 3EO user guides in scope. For this reason we sometimes call it a semi-toolkit — bigger than a single canvas, smaller than a full toolkit.
The Application Guide (v0.1, March 2025) is the canonical long-form narrative for the Portfolio Map. The modern Portfolio Mapping pipeline is the operational reorganization of its content.
What the Portfolio Map does
In a single visual, the Portfolio Map combines five layers:
- Customer Ecosystem — diagram of who the customers are and how they relate
- Customer Needs — 2×2 matrix of needs along maturity and impact dimensions
- Go-To-Market Strategies — 4-stage spectrum from bespoke consulting to self-service
- Market-Facing Value Propositions — 4-stage maturity spectrum from one-off to API/module
- Organizational Elements — teams, units, infrastructure mapped through Domain-Driven Design topology (core → Micro-Enterprises, supporting → Shared Service Platforms, generic → external)
This layered view makes overlaps, gaps, and restructuring opportunities immediately visible.
When to use the Portfolio Map
- When you sense product overlaps between units but can't pin them down
- When you have customer needs nobody is explicitly owning
- When your go-to-market motions mismatch the maturity of your offerings
- When considering organizational restructuring and need a shared map
- When preparing make/buy/partner decisions across the portfolio
